Ontario Trail Network Trailhead

This spatial dataset represents the locations of starting points and secondary access points for trails in the Ontario Trail Network (OTN).

The data includes characteristics about each trail, such as:

  • name
  • length
  • type
  • permitted use
  • amenities
  • managing organization

A trailhead exists for each trail in the OTN, and trailheads may consist of one or more trail segments.

The trailhead data can be linked to the associated OTN trail segment data using geographic information system (GIS) software.

Examples of trail types include:

  • hiking, running and walking
  • cycling and mountain biking
  • all terrain vehicle, snowmobiling and dirt biking
  • cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
  • equestrian
  • canoe and portage

The OTN relies on data sharing partnerships with local trail organizations and municipal, provincial and federal governments for ongoing updates and maintenance.

Trails in the OTN must be:

  • associated with a named trail organization
  • intended for free or paid public access
  • marked and maintained
