This data shows how many new homes have been started towards municipal housing targets.

Included:

  • municipality
  • 10-year housing targets (2022-2031)
  • total housing progress since 2022
  • target for 2024
  • total 2024 housing progress, comprised of: housing starts
    • additional residential units
    • long-term care beds
    • postsecondary student beds (new as of 2024)
    • licensed congregate retirement home suites (new as of 2024)
  • housing progress expressed as a percentage of the annual target
  • housing target status

Examples of housing that is not included:

  • group homes
  • transitional/supportive housing

2023 data was reviewed in Summer 2024. Data published here reflect post-review adjustments and may not align with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data as published in its 2023 and 2024 surveys (Starts and Completions survey). Over a two-year period, however, statistics across both organizations will align.

Column Type Description
Municipality Text

This variable includes the Ontario municipalities which have been assigned housing targets. Ontario is working with its partners to build more homes faster and has assigned the province’s 50 largest and fastest-growing municipalities with housing targets to help meet this goal.

Ten-year housing target Numeric

The number of new homes that municipalities with provincially assigned housing targets need to build in order to meet Ontario’s goal of building more homes faster. Housing targets have been assigned based on current population as well as 2011 to 2021 growth trends.

Total housing progress since 2022 Numeric

The collective number of new homes that municipalities have built since January 1, 2022. This variable includes:

  • starts, additional residential units (ARUs), long-term care (LTC) beds from 2022-2023; and,
  • starts, ARUs, LTC beds, Congregate retirement home suites, and Postsecondary student beds from 2024 onward.
Target for 2024 Numeric

Each municipality's 10-year housing target has been broken down into annual targets for each calendar year (January 1 to December 31). Annual targets ramp up until 2026.

Total 2024 housing progress Numeric

The number of new homes that municipalities have built in the calendar year (January 1 to December 31). This variable includes starts, ARUs, LTC beds, congregate retirement home suites, and postsecondary student beds.

Progress % for 2024 Text

The number of new homes municipalities have built in the calendar year (January 1 to December 31), expressed as a percentage of the municipality’s annual housing target for the same calendar year.
