2011 average car travel speed

Limitations of the data:

This data is used by MTO's Systems Analysis and Forecasting Office to monitor speed and performance on major roadways within the GTA. When using this data, please note the following limitations:

  1. The data was collected using GPS data collected by a mobile smart phone application. As such, while most users of the system are likely passenger cars, there is some uncertainty about vehicle type;
  2. For some road segments, number of observations might be too small to draw adequate conclusions on speed and congestion;
  3. The data reflects average travel speed aggregated over the course of the year. It may not reflect the impacts of non-recurrent or localized congestion.

General terms:

  • "Direction AB" - The travel direction that is the same as the link vector direction;
  • "Direction BA" - The travel direction that is opposite the link vector direction;
  • "BTI" - Buffer Time Index, which is the average travel speed divided by the 95th percentile travel speed (95% of sample can travel faster than this speed), represents how reliable the average travel speed is. BTI close or equal to 1 means the average travel speed is very reliable. The larger the BTI, the less reliable the average travel speed.
