Greenhouse gas emissions reporting by facility

As part of Ontario’s Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan to ensure large polluters are held accountable for their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Ontario posts yearly summaries of greenhouse gas emissions by regulated facilities.

Ontario’s Reg. 390/18 Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Quantification, Reporting and Verification regulation requires that:

  • facilities emitting over 10,000 tonnes of GHG report their emissions
  • facilities emitting over 25,000 tonnes of GHG receive third-party verification of emissions reports
  • electricity importers emitting over zero tonnes of GHG report and receive verification for emissions

Note: April 2019 regulatory amendments to O. Reg. 390/18, designed to reduce burden on the regulated community, removed the requirement for natural gas distributors (NGD) and petroleum product suppliers (PPS) to report their emissions. These changes have no impact on how the government tracks emissions from these sources. Ontario has always used data from the federal National Inventory Report for these emission sources and will continue to use this data for tracking progress to Ontario’s 2030 emission target.
